The Art of Denise Antaya
Denise Antaya’s art focuses on the simple things in life, particularly
the stunning beauty we find in nature. The artist chooses subjects that
range from season to season, but almost always represent the natural
environment that has not yet been ruined by human involvement.
On a technical note, her process starts with an underpainting, called
a brunaille. It’s meticulously rendered, and as the artist states it is
”the most important part of the process”. Starting with the brunaille,
the composition, value-range, structure, and drawing are all organized
before colour is added. As the artist states, “no amount of paint can
correct a bad drawing or poor composition. It’s the foundation needed
to create a successful painting.” Once the composition and structure
is in place, she moves in with colour.
Her masterful compositions create a sense of balance, allowing the
viewer to appreciate the complex and subtle depictions of sunlight
with stunning gradients of chroma. Her extreme sensitivity and
patience in depicting these natural landscapes encourages reflection
and contemplation in each viewer, prompting us to experience the
sublime in our everyday surroundings.

The Art Olympics
Works from the Art Education Program
The St. Marys Station Gallery welcomes you to the first Art Olympics, where we make art a sport of sorts. Historically speaking, between 1915-1952, art was a legitimate category within the Olympics with at least 151 medals awarded in that timeframe. Painting, sculpture, architecture, literature and music were judged alongside traditional sporting competitions. Coinciding with the Winter Olympic Games in Milan, Italy, the St. Marys Station Gallery presents a diverse range of artworks by locals who have taken part in our art education program throughout 2025. While the artworks presented do not depict athletic achievements, the public is invited to “judge” the pieces. People are encouraged to vote on their favourite pieces that fall into a few categories: drawing by a child, acrylic painting, watercolour (with the sub-categories of: landscape, still life, etc.).

A Light in the Dark
The art of Paul Nicholson is a welcome surprise during these times of global turmoil and instability. His artworks are concise pops of nature, colour, beauty, and form. Somehow, Paul’s art is ambiguous and clear at the same time, creating a kind of tension between intuition and design. We welcome you to enjoy these bursts of life and colour as winter enters our own landscapes.
